We have all been there as parents… Whether we have great sleepers or terrible sleepers…. There always seems to be some nights and nap times that are more restless for our children than others. You may sit there and think…. “Why?” “Why isn’t he sleeping as good as he did for the past week?” And then you go down your meticulous checklist… “I fed him enough food, I gave him enough to drink, I bathed him, I put that lavender “calming” lotion on him, he has his paci and his lamby…” “Why won’t he sleep?”
I am completely guilty of the above. God has blessed with 2 wonderful boys who HATE sleep. Luckily with the help of professionals (like the amazing Cradle Coach) I have been able to understand baby sleep habits and cope with it to correct it. I have also learned that there are many factors that can attribute to babies and children sleeping through the night. However, today I am going to write about one of the MOST IMPORTANT factors that will enhance your babies sleeping patterns amongst other healthy benefits.
Now, before I tell you what it is, I want to ask you a favor… Please don’t go running for the hills with misconceptions of what you think or what you have heard about this. When done correctly, this will have an amazing benefit on your baby as he/she grows into a toddler and then into a teen and even into adulthood. So, without further adieu (drumroll please) my secret ingredient is… Chiropractic care!
Whenever I suggest that a baby or child come in and see me (a Chiropractor) I get a confused look followed by: “I thought Chiropractors were for back pain, my baby doesn’t have back pain, she just doesn’t sleep good!” Well, let’s pretend Chiropractors aren’t just for back pain for a few minutes…
Let’s think about what your child has to go through before coming into this world… the birthing process. At this point, it doesn’t matter how your child was born, I believe either way is as equally traumatic for the baby. My point is, that through this whole process, it is inevitable that your baby is going to get a few bumps, bruises and subluxations along the way. “What’s a subluxation?” To put it simply, it is when a joint in your spine or cranium (skull) doesn’t move correctly, and causes potential irritation and inflammation to the nerves surrounding it. This irritation to the nerves can disrupt nerve supply to and from the brain causing dysfunction. This dysfunction can lead to a myriad of problems, one of them being restlessness. Chiropractors find and remove the subluxations so that the joints can function properly again and cranial motion can be restored. You see, the purpose of chiropractic is not to treat the symptom (sleep disturbance, back pain etc.) but to help restore normal functioning to the nervous system so that the body can function optimally.
I can honestly say that I see a huge difference in my children after they are adjusted. They are more relaxed, more enjoyable to be around, and much happier children. I often times have parents that bring their kids into my office for the sole purpose of needing an “attitude adjustment”. Chiropractic care, with the proper diet combination can work wonders on babies, toddlers and teenagers and they respond 10 times faster than adults do. It helps strengthen their immune system, relax their nervous system, and help their to body function optimally.
I hope I was able to give you another useful tool to put in your mommy/daddy toolbox today. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at drnatalie@cimahealth.com. Here’s to nights full of sleep and good dreams!
