Ten Anti-sleep Foods

November 1, 2015 /Posted byMELISSA PERRY / 4406

Ten
Food goes hand in hand with sleep. From exclusively breastfed babies to a toddler who only eats solids, what you give your child can shape how they sleep. We listed 10 types of foods that can prevent your child from sleeping….

  • Ice Cream
  • Shucks. I love my ice cream, but it’s not the best for your baby to sleep. It’s fat content slows down the digestion and often creates tummy aches.

  • Milk Chocolate
  • I know this list is getting worse and worse. But for some people, chocolate can cause stomach acid reflux.

  • Popcorn
  • Unfortunately, you might have to find another snack to munch on during a movie. Popcorn can produce inflammation and gas in the intestines.

  • Fried Foods
  • They’re oily and high in fat and both characteristics can cause stomach pain.

  • Legumes
  • Even though these yummy types of food are healthy, they also can produce gas and cause inflammation, especially in those who aren’t used to eating vegetables regularly.

  • Broccoli
  • These fiber loaded vegetables can cause plenty of gas.

  • Mashed Potatoes
  • If you or your baby have lactose issues, mashed potatoes can cause severe discomfort due to the milk ingestion.

  • Highly Acidic and Spicy Food
  • These types of foods can cause reflux, heartburn, and other symptoms that often interrupts sleep.

  • Sugar
  • Because sugar gives a temporary energy booster, it’s best to stay away from any type of food that includes sugar before bed.

  • Soy
  • Soy foods such as tofu, teriyaki sauce, miso, and soy sauce have a lot of tyramine which can cause alertness…probably not something you want before bed.

Remember, not all these foods effect every child. And some have nutritional properties that your child needs. We recommend keeping a food journal of what you or your child is eating and see how well your child sleeps. If your child seems irritated by some of the food, either give it to them during lunch or do away with it for a little while.
